CASE STUDY: LEADERSHIP

Organization: Moonshot edVentures

Location: Denver, Colorado

Sector: Education

Project: Fundraising workshops and focus groups for leaders of color

THE SCENE:

Moonshot edVentures supports a diverse pipeline of leaders to design and launch the learning environments of tomorrow. Moonshot has supported 84 leaders over five cohorts to design and lead charter schools, micro-schools, district turnaround schools, and after school programs.

OUR APPROACH:

Seed supported Moonshot edVentures and the Fellowship program by providing customized workshops for fellows on the topic of fundraising strategy and program design. Seed also facilitated a focus group with fellows to better understand the lived experience of fundraisers of color. This was part of Seed’s learning plan to identify its role as a catalyst for social justice in the fundraising sector.

THE OUTCOME

A 2018 report entitled Money, Power, and Race: The Lived Experiences of Fundraisers of Color from New York City-based organization, Cause Effective, urges white development professionals to understand their role in addressing the structural racism in fundraising: ‘It is essential for white development staffers and allies to be an active part of the solution, beyond simply “not being part of the problem.”’ Seed’s work with Moonshot edVentures has catalyzed this growth process for our organization.

“Seed Fundraisers helped our Leadership Team get clear on what our fundraising strategy should be, and how to make sure it is aligned to our strategic plan and missional goals. The Seed team has been very supportive of our leaders of color in working to find ways to support them and remove the systemic barriers that prevent our Fellows from successful fundraising.“
